// Rotary Wing Transport Force

Huey Cockpit

The Rotary Wing Transport Force of 14 Iroquois is operated by No.3 Squadron at RNZAF Base Ohakea.

The size of the fleet enables the RNZAF to conduct an overseas deployment of helicopters, while simultaneously retaining the ability to provide ongoing training and maintenance activities. The squadron places a high priority on its ability to deploy and operate in the field. This capability has been tested frequently in recent years, with detachments in Bougainville, East Timor and most recently the Solomon Islands.

 Rotary Wing Transport Force tasks to meet NZDF Force Element requirements:

  • Tactical air mobility,
  • Counter terrorist support.

Other NZDF tasks carried out by the Rotary Wing Transport Force:

  • Very Important Person (VIP) transport,
  • NZ Police assistance,
  • Search and rescues,
  • Aeromedical evacuations,
  • Civil defence support and
  • Disaster relief in NZ and the South Pacific

Future Directions

On 31 July 2006 Defence Minister Phil Goff signed a contract with NH Industries for the purchase of eight NH90 helicopters to replace the Iroquois. Additionally, a contract for the purchase of five A109LIH helicopters was signed on 9 May 2008. These helicopters will be used for aircrew training and to complement the NH90 in the roles previously undertaken by the Iroquois.

In the meantime, the RNZAF will carefully manage the Iroquois fleet to ensure that the Rotary Wing Transport Force continues to meet its obligations. Whether operating the Iroquois or its replacement, there can be no doubt the Rotary Wing Transport Force has a continuing vital role in the service of New Zealand, both here and overseas.
