Within the Headquarters of the New Zealand Defence Force, located in Wellington's Central Business District is the RNZAF's Air Staff. This small unit comprises the Chief of Air Force and his team who assist him in the provision of advice to the Chief of Defence Force on the roles and operations of the Air Force as part of New Zealand Defence Force.

The Chief of Air Force is required by Chief of Defence Force to:

Raise and sustain forces to maintain the military capability and to sustain operations

The Air Staff is responsible for recruiting policy, career management, and administrative and logistics policy for the Air Force. The Central Band of the RNZAF is also located in Wellington. The Air Power Development Centre (located at RNZAF Base Auckland) is also an Air Staff unit.
