// Air Force Museum
Located in Christchurch at the former Wigram Air Base, the Air Force Museum is a fascinating look at the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) from its inception to modern day missions. With over 28 beautifully restored aircraft on display in the architecturally designed atrium and adjoining World War II hangar the Air Force Museum is a must see attraction for the whole family.
Overview
Opened in 1987, the Museum serves as a memorial to all those that have and are currently in the service of their country. Historical information, photographs, collections, medals and personal mementos provide a tangible insight into life for our air men and women.
The Air Force Museum has three simulators for visitors to test their flight skills on, along with interactive displays, changing exhibitions and behind the scenes tours. Special exhibitions such as “Wartime Family” set in a 1940’s house gives a realistic look into life for those left at home during World War II, and tells the stories of families waiting to hear from loved ones.
Restoration
Restoring aircraft to their original condition is pivotal to the museums philosophy of restoration, conservation and education. Currently the Air Force Museum has three projects underway. An Airspeed Oxford, P40 Curtiss Kittyhawk, and a Vickers Vildebeest. Original components are restored to their original condition with expertise from both current and former Air Force personal.
Behind the scenes guided tours of the restoration and storage hangar are held each day, with interactive material available for children to learn more about this fascinating area.
Collections
The Museum holds thousands of original artefacts which have been donated or acquired since the inception of the Museum. These include medals and uniforms, letters from prisoners of war, escape gadgets, propaganda material from both sides, material from recent peacekeeping missions such as East Timor and Afghanistan. All of which help to tell the stories of the Royal New Zealand Air Force through the ages.
The Museum also holds a large research and archives collection and is available to help with enquires into the history of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Contact. info@airforcemuseum.co.nz for further information.
