Former Trident High School student, Flying Officer (FGOFF) Luka Baresic, recently returned to Auckland University where he studied engineering, to judge the ChallENG competition run by the university’s engineering department.

The ChallENG competition involved small motors attached to helium balloons which had to be navigated through an obstacle course.

FGOFF Baresic said, “It was great to return to Auckland University and see events like ChallEng provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and have fun. The students were an enthusiastic and capable bunch, with a good sense of humour.”

FGOFF Baresic joined the Royal NZ Air Force (RNZAF) in 2009 after completing his engineering degree, he now works as a Structural Repair Officer at RNZAF Base Whenuapai.

“My role involves completing specialist structural engineering work on RNZAF aircraft and other equipment.

“I assess structural aircraft damage, determine requirements for repair, review structural modifications to aircraft and provide advice to other RNZAF engineering officers,” said FGOFF Baresic

FGOFF Baresic enjoys his role in the RNZAF and says he has had many experiences that he may not have been exposed to in another job.

“In my current role, I’ve attended courses with the Boeing Company in Seattle, as well as engineering short courses at the University of California and Cranfield University in the UK.

“I would definitely recommend joining the RNZAF to anyone looking for an interesting rewarding job, especially to young people starting out. I’ve received world-class training, made friends for life and gained valuable experience,” said FGOFF Baresic.
