Senior cadets from the City of Upper Hutt Cadet Unit have been assisting Upper Hutt Youthtown over the last five months filling the gaps for specialist instruction and allowing the students to experience more adventurous activities.

Meeting once a week, Under Officer Craig Howell and Staff Sergeant Tom Mair have donated their time to instruct the adventurous activities of the after school programme on Thursday afternoons.

The senior cadets are instructors at their Cadet Unit in Upper Hutt and have used the skills learnt through from their units and courses run by the NZ Defence Force to pass on their knowledge to the Youthtown students.

Staff Sergeant Mair says the topics covered have included fire lighting, river crossing, orienteering and general bush craft skills all focused on being safe in the outdoors.

'It's great to see the guys having fun learning and making real progress. They seem to really enjoy it, and we enjoy their positive feedback, which makes it rewarding for us too," says Staff Sergeant Mair.

"The interaction with the cadets has been so enjoyable that even kids that no longer need to attend want to come back."

The instruction has been so successful that both Staff Sergeant Mair and Under Officer Howell have been asked to return this year.
