Within the Headquarters of the New Zealand Defence Force, located in Wellington's Central Business District is the RNZAF's Air Staff. This unit comprises of the Chief of Air Force and his team who assist him in the provision of advice to the Chief of Defence Force on the roles and operations of the Air Force as part of the New Zealand Defence Force.
The Chief of Air Force is required by the Chief of Defence Force to raise and sustain forces to maintain the military capability and to sustain operations.
The Air Staff is responsible for career management, administrative and logistics policy for the Air Force. Air Staff also commands the Central Band of the RNZAF, located in Wellington, the Air Power Development Centre located in Ohakea and the Directorate of Aeronautical Safety and Health located in Auckland. The Operating and Technical Airworthiness Authorities report to the Chief of Air Force.
