RNZAF Base Ohakea, located 22km West of Palmerston North, is one of the three Air Force bases. It is also New Zealand's third largest airfield.
There are over 1,000 people working at the base and it is home to 488 Wing HQ, flying squadrons and technical support and trade related units including; CT4 Airtrainers of the Pilot Training Squadron and the Central Flying School, the Beech B200 King Airs of No. 42 Squadron, the Iroquois helicopters of No. 3 Squadron and the A109 and NH90 helicopters of the Helicopter Transition Unit (HTU).
Base Ohakea opened in September 1939 as one of two operational bases for New Zealand’s new bomber aircraft.
Today RNZAF Base Ohakea maintains its key role as a training base and logistics hub as well as for search and rescue, VIP flight operations and a variety of other functions.
