First for RNZAF SCSC Award
Wing Commander Glenn Gowthorpe is the first Royal New Zealand Air Force Officer to attend the Singapore Command and Staff Course (SCSC) and he graduated with style—awarded the top Essay Prize, a Distinction Pass in the Military Technology Module, and a Gold pass in the Individual Physical Performance Test.
It is also the first year that the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) aligned the Staff Course to a Masters Degree programme in partnership with Nanyang Technical University.
Held at the SAF Military Training Institute during 2009, the course challenged individuals to examine a wide range of issues from regional and global security issues to the role of the military in operations other than war.
Singapore’s focus on technology was reflected in a hefty military technology module with Rocket Scientists and Professors lecturing the course on RADAR, Electronic Warfare, Communications and Robotics theory. WGCDR Gowthorpe’s RNZAF P-3K sensor training provided a solid foundation for the intense military module.
The course culminated in visits to military establishments in Indonesia and China, which provided students with tangible examples of the roles and equipment of regional armed forces.
WGCDR Gowthorpe said, “The training that I have received in the RNZAF is highly regarded and I was well placed to study with, and academically challenge, military personnel from the technologically advanced SAF.”
WGCDR Gowthorpe is currently posted as Director of Systems Evaluation at Headquarters 485 Wing.
