Wanaka air show
The Royal New Zealand Air Force flew south over Easter weekend, 2–4 April, to take part in Warbirds Over Wanaka—a bi-annual Air Show.
With an impressive line-up of both air and ground displays, the RNZAF was out in force for the 12th anniversary of this aviation event.
Flight Lieutenant Karl Buckrell, who organised the Air Force’s flying programme said, “The public got to see the skill and agility of RNZAF aircrew as they operated a range of aircraft.” Included in the line-up were aerial displays from the Iroquois helicopter, the mighty C-130 Hercules, a Seasprite helicopter and P-3K Orion and, as a tribute to Warbirds, the Air Force’s aircraft of yesteryear—the Tiger Moth and Harvard took to the air.
Honorary Squadron Leader, All Black Captain Richie McCaw rated his flight over the Air Show in an F/A-18 Hornet fighter as “right up there” among experiences of a lifetime. SQNLDR McCaw added that, “Kids want to be a jet pilot or an All Black when they’re growing up and I’m very lucky to have done both.”
Kiwi Blue, the Air Force’s parachute display team, was also on show, descending from the sky with their impressive Air Force emblazoned parachutes.
On the ground, a range of static displays including an Iroquois and Hercules, and a tented camp set up for members of the public to walk through.
Air Force recruiters were also on hand to answer any questions and provide a greater understanding of the activities and roles the RNZAF provides New Zealand.
Over 12,000 spectators attended the event, with the traditional practice day attracting record numbers. “The Air Force always looks forward to attending Warbirds Over Wanaka and showcasing to the public the professionalism and dedication of the RNZAF,” said FLTLT Buckrell.
