ANZAC Judo Challenge

By SQNLDR Murray Simons

In keeping with the ANZAC spirit, a mixed contingent of Australian Defence Force (ADF) and New Zealand Defence Force members recently took on the elite of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in a team event at the 2010 Auckland International Open Judo Championship.

Game Over!

This year’s event was really to test the waters with regards to the level of competition and the level of interest from both the RAF and the NZDF. The RAF really came to the fore with their representation. Their team coach, SGT Fred Harris, is ranked number three in the UK and is likely to represent England in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

On the Anzac side, LTCDR Dave Cordery was another strong contender, but honourably withdrew himself from fighting owing to his unfair advantage—he weighs 120 kg and holds a 3rd degree black belt, the biggest member of the RAF squad weighed in at only 92 kg. LTCDR Cordery, however, performed admirably as the Anzac Team Coach.

During the individual events on Saturday, two of the RAF team took out gold medals. Both were hard won given the high standard of judo from the various nations represented. These included sizeable teams from Australia, New Caledonia, Samoa, and Japan.

Sunday’s Military Team Event competition, albeit good natured, saw some committed fighting. Unfortunately the Anzac team was outclassed, with the RAF team emerging the victors. However, the antipodeans put up a valiant effort, with the final Anzac tally resulting in:

  • 2 wins
  • 6 losses, and
  • 1 draw.

Overall, a successful event was enjoyed by all involved, and judo was the real winner.
