Fun and Games

In every Air Force joe room you can never avoid the intellectually stimulating conversations: who is the fastest, most powerful, most skilful or the best cook, ok maybe not the last one. But, these debates will never be settled over a brew and a box of Tim-Tams. Physical Education and Recreation’s CPL Matthew Pitts explains the launch of Super Squadron.

Squadron is crucial to give Squadrons bragging rights for the rest of the year. The Super Squadron competition tries to encompass the components of fitness: Speed, Endurance, Skill, Power and Agility. However, it was important that entrants negotiated all disciplines as a team utilising individual strengths to win the coveted Super Squadron title.

The competition started on 25 June with the beep test and strength drills. Not to be outdone by their wannabe alpha male colleagues, the female participants proved to be vital to their Squadron, by achieving extra points for their high standards.

The competition continued for the next three weeks with teams competing at: Sports Skills, Tug-of-War and the Swim Gala, complete with a belly flop competition. Entrants were judged on style/ elegance and splash volume.

The favourite Flight Sergeant Jake McAphee lived up to his hype and gained additional points for the Armourers.
Although not his most technically sound flop, his splash
performance blew everyone out of the water.

There were also two new additions to the Super Squadron schedule, Dodgeball and a Cake-off.
Although the Cake-off was popular, the task of judging the competition was not. Luckily the PTI`s were on hand to put their bodies on the line for the cause. They tasted, deliberated and evaluated all Squadron entries on presentation, texture and fat content, (size isn’t everything Directorate of Aeronautical Configuration (DAC)!!). The cakes were ranked and the top three remained to be decided by the Commanding Officer Operational Support Wing (CO OSW) Wing Commander (WGCDR) Russell Mardon.

Enjoying the sweet taste of victory, Supply took home the Cake-Off Spoon with their warm moist muffins and also the prestige of being the overall Super Squadron Champions for 2007, beating the burly Armourers by a handful of points.
