Expressing an interest in the AWO and AWS trades landed a 15-year-old an unforgettable experience in August.
Angelica Cassidy from West Auckland was the lucky winner of one of the special prizes at the “Girls Day Out” this year.
The big prize gave Angelica the opportunity to go flying in an RNZAF aircraft at Base Auckland.
She spent the day with 5 Squadron because she expressed an interest in AWO and AWS trade, so was given the opportunity to go flying on the P-3 Orion.
The daily routine P-3 unit life through the eyes of two Air Warfare Specialists, Corporal Maria Captein and Corporal Rachel Buckingham, helped Angelica understand the military workplace. They buddied up with their new charge, spending the morning showing her around the unit.
In the afternoon Angelica got kitted up in flying overalls and went out with a 5 Squadron crew on a training flight around Auckland.
She thought the experience was “really awesome” with the highlight being flying low level out over the Hauraki Gulf.
