RNZAF Base Woodbourne hosted Interbase Tournament 2007.

Ohakea, the current titleholders for both the Women’s and the Mixed trophies were determined to continue their winning streak. However, teams from Auckland, Wellington and Woodbourne were just as determined to take away the title!

Day one of the tournament saw sparks fly with intense competition between the Auckland mixed taking on the Ohakea mixed, Auckland eventually powered away taking it out 26-13.

The first game of the ladies competition was between Ohakea and Woodbourne. Fantastic talent on display saw Woodbourne come out convincing winners 41 – 21 with SQNDLR Joss Adlam and LAC Stacy Adams (Woodbourne) both having outstanding games.

To follow was the Wellington mixed team taking on the Woodbourne mixed team, an intense game but the result saw the Woodbourne mixed team come out on top 32-26.

Next to play saw great skills and admiration toward both teams having the Auckland ladies take on the Wellington ladies, Auckland ladies taking it out with great shooting from AC Pania Johnston and LAC Tamara Driver (Auckland) and excellent mid court play demonstrated by AC Amiee Wright (Wellington) 28-14.

Day one saw a great day of competition between both the mixed and the women’s teams with the skill level for all players at a high standard and the competitiveness and sportsmanship showing great overall morale.

Day two of competition saw the Woodbourne ladies taking on the Auckland ladies, both undefeated in the competition to date and both teams hungry to win, a great game with excellent mid court and feeding from both sides displayed by CPL Debbie Giddens, AC Vanessa Pollard (Woodbourne), AC Bella Fruean and AC Keisha Osborne (Auckland), with the score playing goal for goal but the full time score saw the Woodbourne ladies coming out on top clinching victory 34-32.

Another tough game to follow with the Ohakea mixed team taking on the Woodbourne mixed team, with the score again playing goal for goal and combinations working well, the Woodbourne mixed team claiming victory 28-24. The game displayed great shooting from CPL Steve Repko (Ohakea) and AC Rowena Campbell (Woodbourne) and excellent feeding into the shooters and mid court play shown by CPL Dan Hurndell (Woodbourne).

The final for the mixed team between Woodbourne and Auckland was hard fought and showed an excellent all round level of play from all players from great shooting to tight defence in the circle, one team had to come out on top and was well deserved with the Woodbourne mixed team claiming victory 31-19.

The final for the ladies saw Auckland take on Woodbourne for the second time that day. With the morning’s game being so close and both teams as eager as each other to take away the title, the game was a nail biter with every goal counting. Woodbourne were able to gain the ascendancy in the final quarter with AC Lauren O’Connell (Woodbourne) missing one shot at goal throughout the entire game. Woodbourne ladies coming out on top with a deserved win taking away the title 42-30.

A special thanks to all the umpires in particular SGT Sally Reid (Army) and AWTR Emma Hura (Navy), for without their assistance the tournament would not have gone ahead. Also a huge thank you to RNZAF Netball stalwart Mrs Pai Perano, our chief Umpire and Bench co-ordinator.

Furthermore a huge thanks goes out to all our sponsors for the tournament – Safe Air, Brick Oven Café, Fresh Choice Springlands, Makana Confectionery, Westpac and Mitchell Sports Power. The support of the sponsors and prizes that were awarded were dazzling and much appreciated by all.

Good luck and congratulations to both the mixed and ladies teams who will be representing the RNZAF at Philomel for the Inter-services competition late August.
