Ohakea Physical Education and Recreation Training’s (PE&RT) annual 10km forest run was held on 22 August 2007 in bright sunny conditions in the Raumai Range forest. Participants turned out in big numbers for this event with over 80 happy Base personnel taking part.

The run consisted of two laps around a five kilometre course over undulating terrain and the now infamous sand hill climb. AC Danny Wanoa said the sand hill was his favourite part of the race.

In the male category SQNLDR Kelvin Read set a blistering pace out in front, he was chased solidly throughout the run by ACs Rhys Dibnah and Chad Warner hotly competing for second place.

In the female category AC Tash Cameron maintained a good lead until the second half of the last lap when fleet-footed CPL Kelley Waite passed her.

The team category was a close affair with the top three teams all in a sprint finish together, the Alabama Hot Pockets (AC Ben Gardiner, AC Scott Cleveland) managed to take the win with only 4 seconds the difference between 1st and 3rd place.

WGCDR Mardon and FLTLT Bradford were also stand-out participants on the day. WGCDR Mardon completed the event in good form after backing up from an impressive interbase soccer performance and FLTLT Bradford managed not to get lost at a PE&RT event. Admin, with 90 percent of their unit participating, were voted best section of the day by the PTIs.

Overall the afternoon was a huge success with smiles on everybody’s faces. The Ohakea PE&RT section wish to thank those that volunteered as marshals as we would not be able to run these sorts of events without them.
