Korean War Commemorated

A wreath laying ceremony was held in Wellington on Monday 25 June to mark the 57th anniversary of the start of the Korean war.  Principal Defence Chaplain, John Neal, conducted the service at the National War Memorial. The 50 NZDF personnel in attendance included an eight-person Catafalque Guard (with two Warriors), a bugler, a drummer, and a wreath bearer from each of the three Services. 

His Excellency Mr Joon-gyu Lee, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, and Brig Warren Whiting (as the Chief of Defence Force's representative) both laid wreaths at the ceremony.  Ambassador Lee also paid his respects at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior.  Approximately 4000 New Zealanders served in the Korean war between 1950 and 1957. 33 New Zealanders died on active service; 79 were wounded, and one was taken prisoner.
