ANZAC Day Television coverage

A vast number of defence related television and radio programmes
will be broadcast on Anzac Day Friday 25 April.

The following has Television
been compiled for your information. Highlights include: TV ONE’s broadcast of the Anzac Day Wreath Laying Ceremony in Wellington, coverage  Reluctant Hero - a documentary about Corporal Willie Apiata VC and Maori TV’s Timor Leste from Kiwi Lines, live coverage of the dawn service at Gallipoli and the New Zealand-only service at Chunuk Bair.

0600 Anzac Day dawn service 2008

0900 Good Morning. This special Anzac Day edition of Good Morning will include interviews with a number of NZDF personnel.

1100 Anzac Day Wreath Laying Ceremony. Live broadcast of the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at the National War Memorial, Wellington.

1230 The Town New Zealand Saved. Documentary about New Zealand’s relationship with the town of Le Quesnoy, France.

1335 Our Lost War: Passchendaele. Documentary about Passchendaele.

1430 ONE News Special – Gallipoli. Live coverage of the Dawn Service at Gallipoli for Anzac Day.

1600 Kiwis at War. Documentary about New Zealander Nancy Wake, who became a resistance fighter and special agent during the German occupation of France.

2035 Reluctant Hero. Documentary about Corporal Willie Apiata of the NZSAS who made history last year when he received New Zealand’s highest military honour, the Victoria Cross, for rescuing a critically-injured soldier while on operations in Afghanistan.

A TATOU TAONGA: ANZAC DAY 2008

0555 Dawn Service, Auckland. Live coverage of the dawn service at the Cenotaph, Auckland War Memorial Museum, with commentary provided by Maori Television presenter Julian Wilcox and Stephen Clarke of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association.

0635 A Tatou Taonga: ANZAC Day 2008. Presenter Wena Harawira previews programme highlights of the day before a live cross to Judy Bailey and Kim Webby in Gallipoli and reports from dawn services from around New Zealand. Bailey also goes behind-the-scenes to report on what happens in the lead-up to ANZAC Day events in Turkey.

0730 Prisoners of War. Studio discussion with veterans kept captive in war time and their descendants – exploring the impact of those experiences and their often untold stories.

0800 Timor-Leste: From Kiwi Lines. Shot on location in Timor-Leste, this new documentary goes behind Kiwi lines to explore the work of the New Zealand Defence Forces based in Dili, providing an insight into the
reality of life for them and the people of Timor-Leste in 2008. Directed and presented by Kim Webby.

0830 New Zealand’s Pacific.  Well-informed panel of studio guests looks at recent events in the Pacific region and debates New Zealand’s current strategy and defence contribution ‘in our own backyard’.

0900 Turangaarere: The Story of Flying Officer John Pohe. Television premiere of an unforgettable story of one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary war heroes – Flying Officer Porokoru Patapu (John) Pohe, the first Maori pilot of the NZRAF and a leader of air crews in the skies over Europe during World War II. Directed by Julian Arahanga.

1000 The Polish Connection. Studio discussion continuing the thread of the John Pohe story, which ends in Poland, followed by the moving story of those who fled that country for New Zealand as children.

1030 From the Attic. New studio-based segment full of surprises, uncovering the stories, mysteries and meaning behind the ANZAC taonga or treasures so many Kiwis have stashed ‘in the attic’.


1100 Putting the ‘A’ into ANZAC. Breaking with all tradition, the programme goes in search of an Aussie perspective on ANZAC Day. What does it mean to them and how is it commemorated across the ditch? Live and exclusive coverage of the Sydney ANZAC Day march and a no-holds barred studio discussion.

1200 ANZAC Address: Peter Arnett. After more than 50 years reporting from battle zones from Vietnam to Iraq, internationally recognised Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Peter Arnett – born in Riverton – returns home to New Zealand to deliver this year’s ANZAC Address for Maori Television. A personal comment to provoke thought on ANZAC Day from a prominent New Zealander; followed by comment and analysis in the studio.

1300 Our ANZAC. Eclectic mix of stories exploring the different ways Kiwis remember and pay tribute to veterans, their families and those who never came home.

1400 Views on Vietnam. Informal discussion with a selection of studio guests who each bring a different perspective on the events and experiences of New Zealanders involved in the Vietnam War. Also previews Tribute08 – a commemoration and reunion event for Kiwi Vietnam vets and their families to be held in Wellington during Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

1425 Dawn Service, Gallipoli. Live broadcast of the combined Australia and New Zealand Dawn Service at ANZAC Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula, attended by thousands of mainly young Kiwis and Australians from around the world. Master of ceremonies: Judy Bailey.

1515 The Western Front. In the 90th year since the end of World War I, most of us still do not know much about the bloody events of the Western Front. NZ military historian Glyn Harper (author of ‘Dark Journey’ and numerous definitive texts on the Kiwi experience of WW1) is in the studio to provide a beginner’s guide to the key moments.

1545 Path to Passchendaele. New documentary following a young taonga puoro player’s journey to Belgium in October last year to attend New Zealand’s 90th commemorations of Passchendaele. Bringing the haunting sounds of the traditional Maori instruments to the urupa (cemetery) of his ancestor and the thousands of others buried there, Horomona Horo goes in search of a connection with the people and whenua (land) of Flanders. Directed by Jasmine Pujji.

1615 Paths of Glory.Feature Film: Stanley Kubrick’s breathtaking 1957 masterpiece starring Kirk Douglas and set in the trenches of the Western Front in World War I. Based loosely on the true story of four French soldiers charged with mutiny, this is one of the most powerful antiwar films ever made.

1745 Po ki te Po / Night after Night / Jede Nacht Wieder. Television premiere of the stunning feature documentary about the New Zealand
survivors who volunteered for the RAF’s Bomber Command during World War II and the impact that experience continues to have on their lives today, not only in New Zealand but also in Germany, Britain, Belgium and Canada. Directed by Jennifer Bush-Daumec.


1915 A Tatou Taonga: ANZAC 2008. Highlights package from the day including coverage of the one-off Villers-Bretonneux
Memorial Service in France, marking 90 years since the ANZACs forced German troops from the village in an historic battle. Plus a live cross to Kim Webby at Gallipoli for an update on events and an interview with Whirimako Black, who will be participating in the Chunuk Bair service.

1930 News: Te Kaea. Local, regional and national Maori and international news from the Maori Television team of reporters – with a focus on ANZAC 2008. (Maori language)

2000 Homai Te Pakipaki ANZAC Special.
Irresistible entertainment special featuring series stalwart Te Hamua lining up the most talented performers from around Aotearoa to share their ANZAC music – songs with a personal significance and connection to ANZAC Day – with a live studio audience and the viewers at home.

2100 ANZAC Short Film Festival. Stellar line-up of new Kiwi short films with an ANZAC theme including the winning entries of Maori Television’s inaugural ANZAC Short Film Competition sponsored by Te Puni Kokiri. Presented by filmmakers Ainsley Gardiner and Tearepa Kahi with studio
guests, the winning filmmakers.

2130 New Zealand Service, Chunuk Bair. Live broadcast of the New Zealand-only service at Chunuk Bair on the Gallipoli
Peninsula, Turkey. The service commemorates the New Zealand contribution to the Allied invasion of Turkey in World War I that saw massive loss of life on all sides. Chunuk Bair is the highest point reached by the Allies, held briefly by the New Zealand forces. Master of ceremonies: Judy Bailey.
